"Free" parking for all? Thanks King Lane!
At the beginning of the semester, it was announced that King Lane would be removing the gate arms for all the parking lots except of course his Majesty's aka Presidential Circle parking area. Hey you got to keep the "peasants” out right...I mean, even King Lane can only be so "liberal" to a point. (And yes, we are being facetious as we all are aware King Lane is a registered Republican, no joke)
The reason given for this curious development is-
The reason given for this curious development is-
"As TSU has grown to become
the second largest HBCU in the nation, so has the need to better utilize
our parking spaces. With our new plan, we aim to reduce the circling of
parking lots to secure an empty space, as
well as prevent reserved spaces from being occupied by unauthorized
vehicles. We have also reduced the parking fee by more than 10% for most categories."
So let us see if we understand the thinking behind such a curious and frankly, a weird...weird idea...you take down the gate arms so now anyone...and we mean...anyone can park in our parking lots even if they have nothing at all to do with TSU? Say for example, a UH student could now park and walk over to his/her class? UH has had tremendous problems with parking on their campus. Or someone visiting a friend in one of the apartment complexes close to TSU or any neighborhood house...neither of these scenarios involves TSU.
Oh yes of course you still have to pay for parking privileges but how does it matter if there isn't any parking spots available? And yes, supposedly there are warnings given prior to being towed...but Parking lots have lately become so full, that ironically the problem the administration decided to address is still there- the circling of parking lots to secure an empty space has likely increased since those of us who paid and used the gates were able to guarantee a spot. But not anymore. One of our writers had to circle the parking lot and finally gave up at 10am on a weekday and had to park on the 4th floor of one of the parking garages, something he/she had never done in more than a decade of working on campus.
But this is what the "geniuses" who run TSU think will be smart policy. And unfortunately their genius idea now seems to have created a massive problem on campus- now almost no one can find parking! Because of course once you give out "free parking" ...anyone can park right...Finally, how will the administration fix this?...Once you give out something for free...can you ever really take it back?
