Low Enrollment & SOPA Chairs update

The latest rumors are that enrollment at TSU is significantly lower from fall 2019 when we were over 9000 students. The numbers are rumored to be much lower. Additionally, a vast majority of students still haven’t paid their tuition, and we wouldn’t blame them if they decided to take a gap semester or a year.

If this is true ... TSU could be in a serious financial mess.

We are still scratching our collective heads wondering why Dean Kieh offered to provide a “waiver” for Dr. Baker in Administration of Justice (after Dr. Drake rescinded her application for Interim Chair- see our previous post) to allow Dr. Baker to serve another 2 years beyond what the Faculty Manual states, but would not extend the same offer to Dr. Adams in Political Science.

There is no such thing as a “waiver” and the Provost wisely decided not to support Dean Kieh’s request.  We are still waiting on the final decision of whom the Interim Chairs (UPEP and AJ) will be beginning September 1

Finally, over the past year, there have been rumors ongoing that Provost Harris and Dean Kieh purposefully are trying to remove Dr. Adams as Interim Chair of Political Science.  Recall that Dr. Adams was unceremoniously removed as Interim Dean back in April 2018 and former Dean Theo Herrington came back out of retirement.

For a man who has dedicated almost 40 years at TSU:

Co-created an envious and wildly lucrative accredited MPA and EMPA programs

Established a book scholarship fund inside the Political Science Department in SOPA

Published widely in journals, book chapters, op-eds and grants

Interviewed on TV and radio about Houston politics

Even had THECB approval for starting up a DPA program (there are only 5 DPA programs in the nation) without taking a single cent from the state of Texas for start-up costs, but strangely enough under King Lane, the DPA was never approved and remains in limbo, even though ironically with Covid an entirely online DPA program could have been fiscally the smartest thing TSU could have done

IMAGINE-->SOPA would have been the only school on campus with not 1, not 2- but 3 Doctoral programs- We would have truly made Barbara Jordan & Mickey Leland very proud!!!!!

TSU has a VERY strange way of rewarding hard work and dedicated TSU loyalty when it comes to Dr. Adams.  There are rumors that the student senate in 2017 passed a unanimous resolution that Dr. Adams should be accepted as TSU’s choice for permanent Dean and presented to King Lane.  Even former Provost Wilson wrote to King Lane finalizing Dr. Adams as his sole choice for Dean.  And yet he was not chosen.
